Supplementation
with high doses of oral vitamin D3 every 3 months did not have a significant
effect on blood pressure in older patients with isolated systolic hypertension
as per a small randomized trial reported online in JAMA Internal Medicine. At
both 3 months and 1 year, there were no differences in office blood pressure
between the supplementation and placebo groups. And there were no effects seen
on nearly all of the secondary outcomes, with the exception of parathyroid
hormone levels, which dropped by 3.8 ng/mL with supplementation relative to
placebo.
